Here is nice jazz score for one of Polanski's early films. The score flows through sounding like Miles and Coltrane, other times just trying to sound like either or both. This is a great soundtrack - perfect for listening to while cooking.

The last two tracks are for two short films Polanksi did. They are on the Criterion DVD for Knife In Water.

"This is the Don Fleming mix of two great songs,"The Night Is Coming On" and "Baby Huey," from the Dim Stars CD, plus a strange, ominous novelty outtake from the sessions called "Frank Sinatra." Dim Stars was the one-off group comprising Sonic Youth members Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, plus Don Fleming (of Gumball, Velvet Monkey, and many other credits), along with Richard. The group was democratic but since Hell had a role in it similar to his role in his previous groups -- singer, bass player, composer of the lyrics, melodies, and often music (though the music was mostly collaborative in Dim Stars) -- this one single was released under his name. It's really great. This and the out of print limited CD EP released simultaneously with it are the first and only releases of this material in this mix. The vinyl was limited to 3000 copies, now out of print."

Painted Desert - Ikue Mori

Here is an album from Japanese electronic drum artist Ikue Mori. She is flagged on each side by two of the best guitar players ever - Marc Ribot and Bob Quine.

Marc Ribot - who has played with too many musicians to name, but is maybe most known for work with Tom Waits, John Zorn & MMW. Ribot is amazing; I just had the good fourtune of seeing him back up T Bone Burnett in Philly.

Bob Quine is a soul mate I never met. His guitar playing is ugly and beautiful; harmonic and disharmonic. He is most know for his work with Richard Hell (I have some Hell coming up). Quine has also worked with John Zorn & Lou Reed.

Here is an album by Eddie Hazel; famed for his Funkadelic solos including Maggot Brain and memorialized by Dean Ween on Tear for Eddie. I've heard many guitar players have the balls to out do Eddie on his own songs; they all fail (Nels Cline & J Mascis came close though). There is a simialrity to Baby Snakes era Zappa on So Goes The Story and any fan of Funkadelic will love this.

Hazel made this album after leaving prison in 1977. Hazel's old bandmates helped out on this album with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins co writting "Frantic Moment," "So Goes The Story," and "Physical Love."

Eddie died in 1992.

Goldsmith Tuesday

Another score to a flawless film. I just had the pleasure of seeing this again on the big screen a couple of weeks ago; I never get tired of this film.

Jerry recieved a nomination for his score, but only Robert Towne walked away with a statue.

In The Kid Stays In The Picture Robert Evans talk about how Jerry Goldsmith was the third person to make a score for the film. Does anyone know who the first three were?

An element of the film that I never understood for a long time was the title, why Chinatown?

Robert Towne was talking to a police man once that worked in Chinatown. He said, "the best thing to do is as little as possible." That fits with JJ Gittes and the ending of the film.

Here is a post for all Talking Heads fans. These are the demos made by David, Chris and Tina (Pre-Jerry). These were recorded at CBS studios in November of 1976. David uses an acoustic guitar on many of these songs (possibly even a twelve string).

Here is a recording of Iggy Pop lecturing at University of Wisconsin. I got this off of Sharing The Groove two plus years ago.

This recording is a great insight into the influences behind the Stooges. Pop lists world music, blues and Coltrane as inspiration and gives illuminating examples.
